Fire Safety Camp

July 23rd was our first fire safety camp for kids and it was a great success. 18 kids came to the fire station and learned many ways to help keep themselves as well as their families safe. We had a bicycle rodeo in the parking lot and each child went home with a new bike helmet that Chief Garcia personally made sure fit them properly. They learned about household poisons/chemical in the household and tried to pick out the difference between poisons and food products. Windex sure looks like blue Gatorade, and it was difficult to tell which were Sudafed pills and which were the mini M&M's. The Porter EMS crew of Aaron and Greg were awesome! Demonstrating how to deal with one of the kids laying in the grass as if they had been ejected in a car accident was a big hit. One of the kids was used as the "patient" and they showed how they would put on the neck collar, checked the body for injuries and then put him on a backboard. The kids said they wouldn't be so afraid if they were in an accident because they would know what to expect and that wearing your seat belt is the best way to avoid being ejected out of a vehicle during an accident.

The theme for camp this year was "Be Prepared. Not Scared!" and we truly hope that the kids discussed with their families the importance of having a home fire escape plan. While most fires occur during 10pm to 5am, many of the children had no idea how to escape their own home should a fire occur during those hours. I'm going to be calling each household in the next few days to see if they created a plan with their families. Special thanks to everyone who assisted in making our first fire safety camp for kids a success!! Another special thanks to Joe Kish and Rob Gray for helping out. Brothers true and through!

We look forward to next year's camp and until then... please practice a fire escape drill with your family. Learn to "Be Prepared. Not Scared!" should a fire happen at your house.
